Upcoming Event: Culvert pipe installation and brush clearing/burning

Date: Saturday, August 17th. We will return on Sunday August 18th if we don't finish on Saturday.

Location: 10661 Old Kentucky Rd, Sparta, TN

Event Description: Highland AMVETS Post 44 is excited to announce a community service event to install a culvert pipe for a washed out driveway that was damaged at the Gomez residence during the storms earlier this year. This project is another fantastic opportunity to come together to respond to the call of a veteran in need. Many hands make light work, and veterans form a special community that takes care of their own. Join us to make a difference for an AMVETS brother.

Volunteer Information:

• Who Can Help: We need individuals to serve as Safety Observers, Picture Takers, and those physically doing work such as heavy lifting and operating gas-powered tools. If you can only work Saturday that is ok, the more people support the quicker we can finish.
• Attire: If you have a grey AMVETS work shirt, please wear it, as we will be taking photos during the build.
• Seating: Folding metal chairs will be available (bring your own cushion). This is a great chance to assist or simply chat with fellow volunteers.
• Weather: High 87F, possible chance of rain with scattered thunderstorms in the morning. 
• Refreshments: We will have water bottles on ice, but you are welcome to bring your own beverages.
• Shade: Jim Mardis will provide a 10x10 popup canopy for additional shade if needed.

Preparation:

• Materials: If you have a chain saw and yard tools like loppers, please bring them. There will be a rented machine on-site doing the digging and burying the culvert pipe. Unlike Dwayne's past culvert install, we will not be salvaging or placing decorative rocks as part of this project. The same machine will be used to assist in clearing and burning the brush.
• Pre-Build Work: Locate requests have been placed for utility lines, and two loads of crush and run gravel as well as the culvert pipes will be staged the day prior.

Directions: From Cookeville, head south to Sparta on Hwy 111, exit TN-136 S/Old Kentucky Rd, turn left onto TN-136 S, and stay on Old Kentucky Rd until you reach 10661 Old Kentucky Rd, go through double gates and park at the first gravel clearing.
