Community Update: Supporting a Veteran in Crisis

Over the weekend of May 3rd, Commander Dwayne was contacted regarding a local Navy veteran, Juan, who was facing the threat of homelessness. Juan served our country from 1958 to 1961 and, after struggling to receive support through other veteran organizations, was referred to Highland AMVETS in hopes of finding assistance.

Though Juan is not a member of our post, his situation speaks to the broader mission we hold dear: to support all veterans in need, regardless of affiliation. Thanks to swift action and the compassion of our leadership, temporary lodging was secured for Juan at the Baymont Hotel in Cookeville, giving him a safe place to stay while longer-term solutions are explored.

This moment serves as a powerful reminder that there are veterans in our own communities who continue to fight unseen battles. Sometimes, all it takes is a timely response and a caring heart to change someone’s circumstances.

We encourage all members to remain vigilant and engaged. Check in with fellow veterans, listen for the quiet needs, and don’t hesitate to refer someone to our post if they’re struggling. We are stronger together—and together, we can make sure those who served are never forgotten.

If you'd like to get involved in supporting future efforts like this or know a veteran who could use a helping hand, please reach out to Commander Dwayne or any post officer.

Semper Fi,
