Huge Project, Mission Accomplished: AMVETS Post 44's Back Porch Renovation Project

On a cold November morning, the AMVETS community came together to take on a big project. Despite the chill in the air, the team’s energy and spirit stayed warm and strong. The goal was clear: rebuild a porch into a fully covered space and add a cover above the basement entryway. This was no small task, but with everyone pitching in, the project moved forward smoothly.
The event was held on Saturday, November 9th, 2025, at Jere Whitson Rd, Cookeville, TN. This project brought together volunteers from Highland AMVETS Post 44 despite weather difficulties. Their mission was to repair and rebuild a covered deck for Jim, a long-time officer and friend of Highland AMVETS Post 44. The team also rebuilt a bulkhead cover over the basement stairs, making the home safer and more comfortable.

A Cold Morning, Warm Hearts
The morning air was frigid, but that did not slow down the volunteers. They arrived early, ready to work and support each other. The cold was a challenge, but the shared purpose kept everyone motivated. Gloves, hats, and sturdy shoes were the order of the day, and the team was well-prepared.
Volunteers worked side by side, each person taking on tasks that matched their skills. Some handled the heavy lifting, while others focused on safety or took photos to capture the day’s progress. The teamwork was impressive. Everyone chipped in, proving that when a community comes together, big things can happen.
The Project Details
The project focused on two main areas:
Rebuilding the back porch into a fully covered deck
This involved removing the old structure and building a new, sturdy porch with new support posts, enclosed wooden railing, and mesh screen. The new design would protect the space from rain and sun, making it usable year-round.
Constructing a cover above the basement entryway
The basement stairs needed the existing bulkhead cover rebuilt to keep out the weather and improve safety. This part of the project required careful planning and precise work.
Taking a Break and Reflecting on Generosity
Midway through the day, the team took a well-deserved lunch break. This pause was a chance to relax, share a meal, and reflect on the importance of the work. It was also a moment to remember the generosity of donors who make projects like this possible.
Without the support of donors, the materials and tools needed for these community projects would be hard to come by. Their contributions help AMVETS continue its mission of service and support. Volunteers expressed gratitude for this generosity, knowing it fuels their ability to give back.
Mission Accomplished with Big Smiles
By the end of the day, the porch was fully rebuilt and covered. The bulkhead cover over the basement stairs was secure and weatherproof. The project was a success, and the team’s hard work showed in the finished product.
More than the physical work, the day was about brotherhood. Volunteers left with big smiles and a sense of satisfaction. They had helped a friend and strengthened bonds within the AMVETS community. The project was a reminder that even on the coldest days, people can come together to create warmth through kindness and teamwork.
